Picture this.
Two teenage girls wandering around Glasgow City centre. Huge grins on faces, big spring in their step.
Well, the reason for that would be the small fact that we were on our way to our first ever Stargate Convention!
Wolf SG Scotland - to the best of my knowledge - is the second Stargate event in Scotland this year. I am very new to Stargate, and I never attended the last event.
This time however, there was no way I was going to miss it!
My friend fic writer Mishy and I arrived at the con in plenty of time. The queue was already pretty long, but it was clear that this was going to be a very small event.
By five O'clock, just under a hundred Gaters were standing in line on the main spiral staircase of the Glasgow Quality Central Hotel. Teryl Rothery arrived bang on time, smiling and waving to everyone. Paul McGillion, Ronny Cox and his band arrived a short time later.
Finally, at 5.45pm, we were let in and were taken straight to the Q&A room. We purchased our convention ticket, as well as one for a group photo with Teryl, Paul and Ronny, before finding seats.
First up on stage, was Ronny Cox, better known as the thoroughly evil Kinsey. He delighted in telling us various stories from his career. From his days on Rock Cop to his more recent work on Stargate. He also told us a rather amusing story as to why he chose to become an actor - and not an assistant director! He told us a little more about Kinsey's role in the season eight episode, but remarked that he was told to be very tight-lipped about what he said to the fans. What he could say, was that Kinsey goes on a mission for the SGC. Shortly after, he left the stage, and handed over to the ever-lovely Teryl Rothery.
Teryl launched straight into the Q&A, after an impromptu photo session. She was asked how she found out about her character's demise. She was given a call from one of the producers (Either Brad Wright or Robert Cooper), saying that they needed to talk about Frasier's role on the show. It was explained to Teryl, that they thought season seven would be the last, and that the wanted to shake things up - by killing Janet. Her response - "You wanna shake thing's up? What about Hammond?!"
Teryl was then asked about the fate of Terylane - her wacky alter ego. She said that she felt Terylane died at the same time as Janet. Another question was asked of Amanda Tapping and Teryl's double act - What role would Minnie's Bump (Amanda's baby) in the Marbel beauty school. "She'd probably do manicures and pedicures!" Teryl joked.
A couple of questions pertaining to Daniel were asked, and two representatives from the DanJan Fan fiction archive - wearing 'Janet Lives' tee shirts -asked if Teryl thought there was anything between Janet and Daniel. Teryl admitted that while her character was still alive, she tried to avoid the question, as Michael Shanks is a close friend. She said, now, looking back, that she could see something between the characters. Teryl then went onto describe how in the episode 2010, they tried to add a 'subtext' to the characters - without letting anyone else know. She said that she and Michael exchanged a lip-lock that was unfortunately edited from the final cut.
John Gallagher - a member of Scottish fan group SG999 - asked about some of the practical jokes that had happened on set. Teryl then proceeded to tell her side of the infamous Duct tape incident.
Long story short - Teryl got duct-taped to a chair by Chris Judge five minutes before a scene! His excuse was that she'd been ignoring him all day!
She also took great delight, in telling up of her love for Star Trek and X Men actor Patrick Stewart, describing how she turned into a teenage girl in his presence when they worked together several years ago. Teryl told us how she redeemed herself years later when she met him once again at a Sci Fi convention. She kept a level head, and as a result, got a kiss on the lips! I realised I was in good company with my RDA obsession!
Finally, she was asked one last question - What were Daniel and Janet's nicknames in bed - Her reply - "I never kiss and tell!"
Next up, was Paul McGillion - known to us as Dr Carson Beckett in Atlantis, and the younger Ernest Littlefield in the season one SG1 episode 'The Torment of Tantalus'. He arrived holding a Scotland scarf, much to the delight of the mainly Scottish audience.
Paul told of his happiness as being back Scotland for his second-ever convention. Paul was born in Paisley, and moved to Vancouver at the age of two, before moving back for a few years at the age of eleven. He told us that it was his idea alone to use his Scottish accent, and revealed that it was that that got him the role. Paul told us that he and Teryl have known each other for ten years, having attended some acting classes together in Vancouver.
Paul then mentioned his love of Irn Bru, and his disappointment at not being able to buy any at the station's Marks and Spencers. SG999 were there to save him, presenting the actor with a two-litre bottle of the stuff!
He then started on the questions. The very first one - Are you single?
Yes he is!
From that point on, every woman that asked a question got the same response -"I'm single." including myself, when I asked him what his favourite episode of Atlantis is. High up on his list, was 'Poison in the Well' as it was heavily centred on Carson. Other highlights for him, were 'Rising' and 'The Storm'. He said the season finale was brilliant, and that the second half of the season in his opinion is very strong.
Mishy then asked him how he felt about Carson almost killing Jack O'Neill and John Sheppard in the opening scenes of 'Rising'. His first answer to that was "What was the question?" He then said that he felt okay about it!
Throughout the Q&A, his accent gradually became less Canadian, and more Scottish!
His last question was one, that I'm sure the ladies will be very interested in - Boxers or Briefs?
"Neither! Hello Scotland!"
There was then an opportunity for those with photo tickets to get their group and single photos. (The single Paul photos - originally taken during Teryl's talk, had to be retaken). Myself, Mishy. And Gateworlder Astronomical Chick had a picture taken with all the actors.
After a short break, Ronny Cox's band took the stage. He was there with two new band members, and his son. They played a few lovely folk numbers all written by Ronny himself. The finished off with a song about the festive time of year. Ronny said it was Kinsey's type of Christmas song!
Trust me - It was!
Time was now against us, and we have to leave early. We got taken to the actor's room to get our autographs. Teryl signed a season three box set for me, while Paul and Ronny signed my copy of the brand new official Stargate magazine.
I'm a bit of an artist, and I've recently branched into the world of fan art, so I'd done portrait sketches of the three of them. Ronny liked his and said thank you. I think Paul was taken aback, as he's so new to the convention scene. He told me that I was "a darling", before he hugged me and kissed me!!!( woo hoo!). I then gave Teryl hers. She said it was wonderful and thanked me very much before she gave me a big hug.
After that, it was time to go and get the train (oh the disadvantages of being a teenager!).
I had a great time, and Paul, Ronny and Teryl were absolutely great!
Here's hoping there's another Scottish event soon!
Suekay signing off!
